National Resource Center for Youth Services: Resource Family Training & Support

NRCYS

Support Groups for Region 2

Support Network Groups are designed to assist resource parents with in-service training, community resource information, peer support, and communication with DHS. Attending on a regular basis is not only a great way to get the emotional and practical support you need to succeed, it's a great way to stay on top of the training requirements you need to fulfill. Some groups serve dinner or snacks; all provide child care with your RSVP. Please contact the facilitator to find out about the topic or confirm your attendance.

Garvin/McClain Counties Support Network Group Meeting

September 12, 2026

Methodist Church
401 North Willow
Pauls Valley, OK 73075

Topic: Special Education Rights and Advocacy

Navigating the educational system can be challenging, especially when advocating for children with unique learning needs. Join us for an informative session on Special Education Rights and Advocacy, designed to help caregivers better understand the educational rights and protections available to children in foster care.

Participants will learn about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and how this federal law supports educational stability and success for students in foster care. The presentation will also provide an overview of special education laws, explain the differences between a 504 Plan and an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and offer practical strategies for advocating for a child's educational needs.

This session is ideal for foster parents, kinship caregivers, adoptive parents, and professionals who want to build confidence in supporting students and ensuring they receive the services and accommodations they deserve.
