Under what Conditions Can a Youth Remain in Care Beyond 18?

If the youth has not graduated from high school or if he/she is in need of special treatment that can not be provided through another source, or if he/she is a teen parents who needs to be under supervision.

Is the Extended Medicaid Option Available for Youth Until 21?

Yes

Living in a DYFS paid placement on or after 10/1/00, was living in a DYFS paid placement on his/her 18th birthday, meets Medicaid eligibility requirements (except for income). No renewal is necessary. State has gone to a universal card which made things much easier.

Can Youth in Care Get Driver’s Licenses?

New Jersey uses wraparound money to pay for driving lessons.

Does the State Offer Tuition Waivers for Foster Youth?

Yes

The program covers homeless and foster children from 16 to 23 years old who have been in the care of DYFS, in a state-subsidized shelter, a TLP program, or supervised living program for at least nine months. They must maintain satisfactory grades.
