Statewide Life Skill Seminars

Life skills seminars provide youth with the opportunity to learn and experience new life skills that will help them successfully navigate the journey to become independent, connect with other youth who are transitioning to self-sufficiency, and gain knowledge of other unique community resources. This year, Housing, Employment, Health, and Permanent Connections are key elements the seminar series will explore. Each of the seminars will be offered in three locations throughout the state. Seminar flyers with dates and locations will be distributed through OKDHS email with registration specifics, or select the flyer links below.

Am I Connected?: A Statewide Permanent Connections Seminar

Permanent ConnectionsHaving a permanent connection is a key ingredient for SUCCESS. This seminar will break down the serious topic and provide participants with practical knowledge and hands on information about permanency options. Through activities, film, and lively discussion participants explore permanency options, identify possible connections, and gain clarity on what it takes to maintain lifetime relationships.

Power Through Choices: A Statewide Health Seminar

Health ElementPower Through Choices is a seminar to empower young people with the knowledge and skills to prevent pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. The seminar will emphasize two main themes: self-empowerment and the impact of choices on an individual's future. The information provided will focus on making healthy choices related to sexual behavior, building contraceptive knowledge and skills, developing effective communication skills and learning how to access available resources.

FAFSA Fridays: A Statewide Education Seminar

Education ElementDo you need help completing the Federal Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA)? Have you heard that there is additional funding through the Oklahoma Independent Living program, but you need more information about it and how to access this assistance? If you are a Senior or GED student who will begin college or technical school in 2011-2012, then this is your opportunity!

FAFSA Fridays are webinars that will be held every Friday in February from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Webinar participants will:

  • Have an opportunity to learn how to apply for federal and state financial aid using the FAFSA.
  • Learn more about the Tuition Waiver and the Education Training Voucher (ETV).
  • Ask questions.

All you need is a computer with internet access and a phone. If you would like face-to-face assistance, you can participate in the webinar at one of the locations nearest you. Please register one week prior to the webinar.

Are You Hiring? : A Statewide Employment Seminar

Employment ElementAre You Hiring? is a seminar for youth interested in finding and maintaining stable employment. Participants will learn basic employment skills needed for the workplace such as proper introductions, dressing for success, creating a resume and interviewing. The seminar also includes valuable information regarding Career Technology programs throughout the state.

U Build It: A Statewide Housing Seminar

Housing ElementThis is the first in a series of statewide seminars being delivered in three locations throughout the state. It is designed to give youth a clear picture of the process for securing stable housing. Youth will identify housing options, learn how to apply for an apartment or housing programs, determine monthly expenses and startup costs, and learn what's available from the Yes I Can! program. The seminar also includes a building competition in which youth apply the skills and information they've learned in a unique, exciting way.
