NewsInternet SafetyWith all of the recent stories in the media about cyberbullying and “sexting,” many parents are concerned about protecting children and youth as they utilize social media such as Facebook or Twitter.Parents and trusted adults play an important role in teaching children and youth how to use social media safely and appropriately. The most important step parents can take is to talk with young people to help them understand what information should be private that once information is posted online, it cannot be taken back. Teaching youth about the importance of privacy settings to restrict who can access and post on sites and profiles is another important step. Finally, coaching and supporting young people to report suspicious, bullying or threatening messages to authorities can help protect your children and young people. The following websites provide information and guidance that may be helpful to you regarding both cyber safety and internet bullying: Support for Bridge Resource FamiliesDo you ever feel like you are alone and that no one understands the challenges you face caring for children who have experienced child abuse and neglect? Foster parent associations are designed to help meet your need to share information about both the challenges and rewards of being Bridge resource parents. Support groups can serve as excellent sources of information about resources you need to care for the children placed with you.Support groups exist throughout Oklahoma and there is likely one near you. You can find out more information about support groups in your area on the Foster Care and Adoptive Organization website under the resource tab www.fcao.org or on the OKDHS Bridge portal www.okbridgefamilies.com. If there is no association or support group in your area, talk to your resource specialist about starting one. |
